Leigh and Kayla
From our month long trip to Oxford together last May after being modified by deepart.io.
May I
Similar to Gin Rummy, the goal of the game is to collect certain sets of cards each round and remove the rest of the cards out of your hand.
Using two 54 card decks (2-3) and three decks for (4-6), there are 7 rounds of may I.
Some definitions:
Book: 3 of a kind ex. 3 threes, 3 fours ect
Run: 4 cards in sequential order in the same suit ex. ace, two, three and four of spades. (aces are high or low but both cannot be on a single run)
The first four rounds have 10 cards dealt to each person and for the final three 12 cards are dealt. Starting to the left of the dealer (the person who deals rotates from round to round clockwise), a person can chose whether they want the flipped over card. If they say no, then the next player gets asked and the next...ect. The player who wants the card picks it up and then must discard a card from their hand. If no one wants the card then the person to the left of the dealer picks up the first card from the top of the deck and discards a card. *if the card flipped over is a joker, put the joker on the bottom of the deck and draw another card from the top. From here on each person clockwise gets the choice of the discard from the previous player or the top of the deck and must discard one card from their hand. If you want a card that has been discarded but it is not your turn you can say aloud, "May I". Preference goes in order of the one closest to the person whose turn it is. If someone in front of you says they want the card, then they must take the card. For anyone who gets a card not on their turn (as a result of the May I), they must take an additional card from the top of the deck. The person whose turn it is then take the card on the top of the deck (they do not have the option to take the card at the top of the discard pile).
Each round individuals will need to craft either books or runs (depending on the round). once a player has gotten the required runs or books (in total and only that amount), they can, on their turn, place them in front of them (after picking up a card). ex. Round one is two books, Kayla has drawn the last king that she needs for her book and she already has a second book of queens in her hand. She sets down both books in front of her and discards a card from the remainder of her hand. Once a player has put down all of the runs or books required of them, then they may continue to draw cards on their turn and attempt to add to the books or runs already down on the table, their own or other players. A person can only play on books or runs on the table if they themselves have the required runs or books down in front of themselves. The goal being to put down enough cards that they discard or put down the last card in their hand.
Jokers are wild and can be played in any run or book, (even those on the table played by another person assuming that you are down with the required books or runs for that round), but no more than one joker can be played on any run or book. If someone plays a joker in a run and someone else adds that missing card for which the joker is standing in, then the joker is either placed high or low in the run at the player who played the card's wish.
EX: Leigh has played a book of threes and a run of the 3 and 4 of hearts, a joker and the 6 of hearts and discards a queen of spades. Kayla who is next draws the top card from the deck. Kayla is also down with a book of 5s and a run of Jack, Queen, King and Ace of clubs. She drew the 5 of hearts and plays it on Leigh's run displacing the joker. Leigh asks Kayla whether she wants the joker high or low. Kayla says high as she has the 8 of hearts in her hand and can now play it because the joker is now standing in for the 7 of hearts.
If its a person's turn and they are able to play on other people's hands as well as their own and the person before them discards a card that is playable on one or more books and/or runs, then the person whose turn it is may pick up the card but must hold it in their hand for one round before being able to play it.
Once a player has played all their cards they say that they are out and everyone else must add up the point total in their hand. The totals are written down and carry over with each hand. The person who went out has a total of zero for that round.
Points: Number values are equal to the number on the card or 10 for any face card, 20 for aces and 50 for any jokers. If a player has put down cards in front of them, these do not count towards their total.
Round Requirements
1st round: 2 books
2nd round: 1 book and 1 run
3rd round: 2 runs
4th round: 3 books
*start dealing 12 cards*
5th round: 2 books and 1 run
6th round: 2 runs and 1 book
*7th round: 3 runs and must use all cards (extend passed 4 cards)
*The last round has unique rules. Rather than putting down the cards when you have 3 runs, you must hold the cards in your hands until you have 3 runs at least and all cards of your hand are an extension of those runs. Thus once, all cards in your hand play for three runs then you put them all down (on your turn) and everyone must count.
**additional note, when two or more runs are required, these runs cannot be in the same suit.
***Should all face down cards be used up, then the card at the top of the discard is set aside and the remaining discard is reshuffled and placed face down beside the top of the previous discard.
